Jack-O, I'm not a fan of the brass balls & showmanship either. That's cheap veneer, and they have that in Cuba and North Korea and Libya too. The real question is what lies beneath the veneer? That's the way we should all be judged, don't you think?
Actually, I always liked the "brass-balls and showmanship" aspect of American culture...from across the pond it always makes you think that there's something more interesting to watch in the States that's less mundane than over here, where the grass definitely is always greener across the road.
